Dilemma

I have a major dilemma.  I have a project on next years list for the WIPocolypse that I began when I first started stitching.  I will not date myself, but I have to admit, I am amazed the fabric is still in tact.  Well, the problem is, I am self taught and figured out a bunch of stuff later my stitchy life.  The problem in this case is that the stitches are not all going in the same direction.  Its a mess.  Now, I really want to finish because I am 1/4 of way through, but the fact that the stitches are a mess is really bothering me.  I am attached to this piece because its the first big project I ever started.  The completed part is a line of lettering with a border and some garland.  I can unpick the garland to correct, but the lettering with the border is impossible.  The majority of the piece would be stitched correctly.
So, the question is, should I finish it and keep it as a reminder of all that I have learned?  Or should I just resign myself to the fact that I should begin again?
I leave it to you fellow friends.  Should I toss it, or should I finish her up?

oh dear... I completely understand your frustration... maybe you can post a picture of the project you're talking about so we all can see if the "mistakes" are really visible for those who don't know the project?

I think you should finish it as is. As you said...it has a lot of sentimental value and really show how much you have learned. I know I always smile when I look back at my first finishes even though they are far from perfect.

happy stitching...

I vote for finishing it as it is.
You could date the original piece and then date the finished article to show how you progressed across the years.
I bet the untrained eye can't even see the "mistakes" anyway!

I think you should finish as it is. What a treasure and visual for you to see how far you came. I also think you should type a "story" to go with it, have a pocket on the back of the framing and keep the story with the piece for The future!

I would pick out the garland and leave the lettering as is. The majority of the project will be just right, and you are probably the only one who will notice the beginner's stitches. I have a piece like that too. The top few rows of my first sampler were done with the entire piece of floss (all 6 strands) before I realized my mistake. I left it as a reminder of my "learning curve!" Happy Stitching!

keep it as it is .. think of it as a training sampler for your stitching to show how well you have learnt your art as they used to in the "old days " well before the advent of computers ..lol ... be proud of how far you have come :) love mouse xxx

Reading between the lines, I get the feeling that you really want to leave the piece intact, due to its sentimental value. I think you should follow your heart and just pick up where you left off. When you look at the finished piece, it will reflect how far you've come as a stitcher.

I would finish it as is, the mistakes are good reminders how much you have learned.

Joy, it sounds like you want to keep this piece intact, so I say go for it!! It'll always serve to remind you of your stitching progress. :D
